Oliva Cigars
Oliva cigars began in Cuba in 1886. In the 1960s the Cuban Communist uprising forced Oliva Cigars to leave for Nicaragua. Where they were able to grow the same Cuban seed tobacco and recreate the distinctive Cuban taste of their beloved cigars.
Melanio Oliva planted his first crop of tobacco in Pinar Del Rio, Cuba in 1886. Which unknowingly for him would be the start of a tobacco empire. An empire that would not only save his family from the tyranny of Fidel Castro but would make his name world renowned by cigar smokers all across the globe.
After 10 years of successful tobacco harvests’ Melanio Oliva had to put his growing operation on pause in 1895. When the Cuban War of Independence broke out Melanio Oliva stepped up to fight in the war. He later returned in the early 1920s to resume doing what he truly loved, growing amazing tobacco for his cigars. Melanio Oliva was then able to pass on his families fields to his son who was able to grow on them for almost 70 years until the 1960s.
When the 1960s rolled around the island of Cuba was being over run by Communists. The grandson of Melanio Oliva, Gilberto Oliva felt this pressure and decided to seek a better life. He traveled around from country to country including Honduras, Panama, Mexico, and the Philippines.
He eventually made it to Nicaragua where he found the fertile soil to be similar to that in Cuba. Perfect for the Cuban seed tobacco that would recreate the distinctive Cuban taste he wanted with his Cigars.
Oliva slowly built itself up into a brand that transcends definition. More than luxury. More than boutique style. Oliva cigars were in a league of their own.
The definitive proof of that sentiment came with the Oliva Serie V Melanio. A full bodied masterpiece that immediately made a grand splash on the market. The Serie V Melanio Figurado received the near perfect 96 point score from Cigar Aficionado. A feat that has only been accomplished by a dozen sticks made outside of Cuba.
That rating made it clear. There were no surprises when the Serie V Melanio Figurado was awarded cigar of the year for 2014. The critics could not stop raving about its smooth and rich Sumatra wrapper. Or its lavish and plentiful taste of leather, coffee, caramel, and toasted wood.
From that day on, Oliva was one of the top cigar brands. Not just in the United States. On the entire planet. Their success has been unstoppable since then.
In the years after Olia consistently received 90 plus rating for their blends. With the original Serie V blend receiving a 95 rating and the number three spot for 2017’s Top 25. Even something as simple as a new size of the Melanio blend received another 95! Along with the number eight spot for 2020!
Through their hard work and determination, the Oliva family has continued their passion for cigars and crafted some amazing award winning brands and highly rated cigars. They continue to own and operate the second largest factory in Nicaragua.
